LB Australia has an established record for introducing innovative road safety products. In 1988 LBA undertook market research for a new British product being the four wire rope safety fence and in 1991 made the initial sale of that product to a location in Munno Para South Australia. The second sale was a short fence close to where we are today : outside of the Gold Coast Airport, where it is still in action 27 years later. LB Australia had a 20 year association with wire rope safety fence in Australia, India and Taiwan. Then as motorcyclists in Europe and Australia expressed concerns about wire rope fence LBA sourced a continuous motorcyclist protection systems (CMPS) used in France “Moto Tub” in 1999 and later in 2007 another CMPS in used in Spain “Basyc”. From 2010 in response to a Vicroads initiative, LBA moved to supply of discontinuous motorcyclists protection systems (DMPS) in Australia and New Zealand.
Carrying on this interest in introducing innovative road safety products LBA contracted 2011 introduce the remarkable Smart Cushion crash cushion product into Australia. Developed and used in the USA since 2003 it was unknown outside of the USA. In 2016 the Smart Cushion proved to be an innovation ahead of it’s time: the original design tested to NCHRP350 also successfully passed the full suite of MASH tests.
Then in 2013 LBA began an association with the remarkable GDTech (Global Design Technology) group that has had a dedicated team working is safety barriers design and assessment since 2001.
In 2018 GDTech introduced LBA to the Desami company and their low stress parapet products. In 2014 Desami won a government contract to develop a parapet that transmitted low stresses to the bridge deck. The rest of the story is well documented in this conference (refer David De Saedeleer and Joseph Marra’s paper).
LBA aim is to introduce the extraordinary. Not all innovation succeeds commercially some is products are shoulders to better products, but our belief is not be supporting the ordinary.
